I started out wanting to be a PHP dev...

After the first year as an apprentice to a Systems Admin, my job was cut due to levy funding... Government eh? But that was cool. I went straight into working for a startup as a Systems Admin. The startup was called Newbytes LLC and we were producing an anti-spam engine for ISP's to use. In those days, the interwebz was largely tailored to bandwidth usage. ISP's were paying a tremendous amount of money for spam flowing down their pipes and into their users' inboxes.  Of course home-based broadband internet was still kind of science fiction in these days, so Dial Up was where it was at and saving people precious bandwidth was crucial.

spam

For 2 years we toiled and tested, eventually having 250 FreeBSD servers purchased from AudioGalaxy after their untimely demise from the feds, that were intercepting and hosting mail. The premise was neat; ISP's change their MX records to point to us, we intercep the mail, filter it, send the good stuff on to the ISP and maintain the "spam" in a box that the user could login and check whenever they wanted (For false positives and such).  The engine was remarkable. We had a 99.9999% accuracy and at our peak were filtering 3 million email a day. We must have done something right because our investors came in one day and told us that they sold the company to Postini, which was then later sold to Google.

So, long story short, today I like to pretend that those fancy dancy spam filters in your Gmail are the descendants of what I started 2 1/2 decades ago :-). Throughout those years, I always secretly admired our lead frontend dev for creating what i believed was an awesome interface to our spam boxes. All completely done in PHP, which started me down that path...
