And work for myself...

During the next couple of years I was a Systems Admin for an aerospace company. It wasn't huge, only about 50 employees, and of those only about a dozen of them were actual office employees, so it was a pretty laid back job. I had lots of side projects to work on, which just so happened to involve learning PHP to build them a better website. While the website itself never got off the ground, my PHP skills certainly did. Which turned out to be good, because the economy around that time took a hit, and so did jobs. I ended up going to work for the State of Idaho as a support tech in one of their local health districts.

Essentially I was a cyber janitor, but it paid the bills. I did get to do cool things like learn all about HIPAA regulations and how those relate to the IT world, become HIPAA certified, work on the FEMA crew for disaster preparedness and help develop and implement the architecture from an IT standpoint for such a scenario. Essentially, if The Walking Dead ever came true, I know that technologically, North Idaho has the plan in place to deal with it.
